Subject: Frontier Airlines Starts Charging for Carry-Ons, Coffee and Soda

Frontier Airlines has announced that it will now charge additional fees for carry-on bags for any booking  not done through the airline.  The new fee, applicable for all basic fares not booked on the airline's own website will be charged for bags placed in the overhead bin. Passengers will have to fork over $25 if the fee is paid in advance and a whopping $100 at the gate.  Small items that can go under the seat don't apply.

"With this change, we are ensuring that our most loyal customers – Ascent and Summit level members of EarlyReturns, those who book Economy, Classic and Classic Plus tickets, including all customers who book through FlyFrontier.com, will have more space onboard the aircraft for their carry-on bags," Frontier CEO David Siegel said in the airline's announcement…As we unbundle our product further, we ensure those customers who want the absolute lowest fares can always find them at FlyFrontier.com."

The phrase "unbunding" is often used in the airline industry as a friendly euphemism for the process of charging for "ancillaries" or services that used to be included in the ticket price but aren't anymore.

Frontier said it will also start charge $1.99 for coffee, tea, soda and juice on all flights. In a small move toward a semblance of generosity, coffee drinkers will be able to get refills for free.
